We went to the theatre to watch Lizzie Siddal Beyond the Muse. The theatre de la Faisanderie, in Chantilly, opens onto a lake in the background, a funny coincidence that reminded us of the famous painting of Lizzie Siddal called “ Ophelia “, by John Everett Millais. Lizzie was a model, and a muse for two painters of the 19th century Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Rossetti and Millais. She discovered thanks to Rossetti that she was good at painting and since then she didn’t want to be represented as a Greek goddess but as herself. For her, the painters were idealising her too much. She became an artist but struggled to be recognised as such. After some years, she eventually married Rossetti and her paintings were recognised but she died of a sickness caused by a pneumonia she had caught years before as she was pausing in a bath tub for Millais.
Now, more about the comedian, Céline Devalan, who wrote the play and interpreted the role of Lizzie Siddal. Her acting, mostly a monologue, was very realistic. She knew how to catch our attention and make us feel the presence of other characters. She was captivated by the famous Pre-Raphaelite painting of Ophelia that she discovered when she was 20, and decided to investigate about the model’s life.

Une après-midi au théâtre
Nous sommes allés au théâtre pour regarder la pièce Lizzie Siddal, beyond the Muse. Cétait au théâtre de La Faisanderie de Chantilly, situé dans le Potager des Princes, dont la scène ouvre sur un lac. Drôle de coïncidence qui nous a rappelé la célèbre peinture, Ophelia, de John Everett Millais. Lizzie fut un modèle et une muse pour deux peintres du mouvement Pré-Raphaëlite du XIXe siècle, Rossetti et Millais.
Grâce à Rossetti, elle découvrit qu’elle était douée pour la peinture, dès lors elle ne voulu plus être représentée comme une déesse grecque mais telle qu’elle était. Selon elle, les peintres l’idéalisaient beaucoup trop. Elle devint peintre mais mis beaucoup de temps à être reconnue comme artiste. Finalement elle se maria avec Rossetti mais elle mourut d’une maladie causée par une pneumonie contractée alors qu’elle posait dans une baignoire pour Ophelia.
A présent, parlons de la comédienne, Céline Devalan, qui a écrit la pièce et interprété le rôle de Lizzie Siddal. Son jeu, principalement un monologue, était vraiment réaliste. Elle a su captiver notre attention et nous faire ressentir la présence d’autres personnages. Quand elle avait 20 ans, étudiante à Londres, elle fut captivée par le célèbre tableau Pré-Raphaëlite Ophélia et décida de faire des recherches sur la vie de la muse.
Nous y sommes allés avec la classe de LLCE de terminale. Nous avons tous beaucoup apprécié !
